I am studying the history of Alabama lighthouses, and have ascertained the following lighthouses in Alabama:
1. Mobile Point (1822)
2. Mobile Point (temporary light installed by Union forces after Battle of Mobile Bay)-1864
3. Mobile Point (iron structure)-1872
4. Mobile Point (current, active structure-1966)
5. Sand Island (1838)
6. Sand Island (1859)
7. Sand Island (1864-temporary structure)
8. Sand Island (1872)
9. Choctaw Point (1830)
10. Battery Gladden (1872)
11. Middle Bay (1885)
12. Grant's Pass (1839?)
13. Grant's Pass (1864)
There is reason to believe that there was a lighthouse on Dauphin Island as early as 1763. (State Archives has a 1763 British map indicating 3 lighthouses in Alabama in 1763).Does anyone have any information on these lighthouses?
